Just speak the truth.

Many years ago, one of the most respected managers I’ve gotten to work with, shared a piece of advice that has remained with me:

“If you care about your team, you’ll tell them the truth.”

This isn’t about ease or comfort. It takes courage to be honest, especially when the truth may be hard to share. That said, telling the truth is also just as much about saying “thank you” or “nice work”.

Over time, I’ve come to see this as more than just a leadership principle; it’s a life principle. Speaking the truth is an act of care.

It demonstrates respect (including self-respect), builds trust, and provides people with the clarity they need to grow and the chance to adjust as necessary.

I am increasingly convinced that courageous honesty is one of the most underrated leadership skills. This principle is essential for both new leaders and seasoned professionals.

How does this relate to my personal story I’ve been sharing? It fits perfectly.

Through my journey these last couple of years, breaking from my alcohol, escaping a toxic marriage, and so much more, this mindset has saved me on many occasions when I felt maybe afraid to speak up, or hesitant to express my preferences. I am reminded of this quote, just speak the truth.
